Day One —The Institute for Colored Youth

This February, Rachel Cargle is posting a daily prompt on her Instagram feed, a topic to research and reflect on. “Black history is American history. Do the work to learn and honor it.”

Day One Prompt
The Institute for Colored Youth

Brief Reflection
After reading about the Institute, I followed the links to notable graduates and was enamored of Josephine Silone Yates, a scientist, journalist, and professor. Cheers to Richard Humphreys for feeling called to action following a Philly race riot and funding the Institute for Colored Youth. Cheers to him for seeing the value of a focus on teaching. Cheers to the all African-American faculty. And cheers to Josephine and her peers for blazing trails during the most difficult of centuries.
